Toyota Motor Corp. recalled 2.17 million vehicles in the U.S. on Thursday to address accelerator pedals that could get caught up in rugs and carpets stuck in the driver's side.
The world's No. 1 automaker said that more than half of the vehicles under recall are added to a massive 2009 recall that fixed gas pedal stuck in the mat.
Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles globally on security issues since 2009. U.S. regulators said this month that electronic faults are not to blame for the sudden acceleration reports, unwanted.
The Japanese automaker said it would add three models for pedal removal trapping 2009: about 600,000 Toyota 4Runner SUV model years 2003-2009, 761,000 RAV4 compact SUV for the model years 2006-2010, and 17,000 Lexus LX 570s in 2008 -2011 model years.
The recall also includes 372,000 RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400H vehicles from 2004 through early 2007 model years 2004-2006 and 397,000 Toyota Highlander SUV and hybrid versions to replace the carpet floor covering and fastening hooks on the side the driver that could interfere with the accelerator pedal arm.
Toyota also recalled 20,000 of 2006 to early 2007 GS 300 and GS 350 all-wheel drive vehicles to change the shape of a plastic pad embedded in the driver's side carpet floor could impair pedal.
Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said the company was aware of any accidents or injuries related to withdrawals again.
